(1755-1794)
revolutionary
Of Prussian origin, Jean-Baptiste du Val-de-Grâce, baron de Cloots, who would later be known as Anacharis, was born in Gnadenthal, near Clives. He came to Paris in 1776, where he contributed to the Encyclopédie of denis diderot and, in 1789, became a supporter of the revolution of 1789. He styled himself "orator of the human race" and a "citizen of humanity," and was a member of the Jacobin Club, where he stood out because of his extreme revolutionary views. A deputy to the Convention (1792), he joined the Hébertists and played an active role in the de-Christianization movement (late 1793) and in the establishment of the cult of Reason. Shortly after the denunciation of a foreign conspiracy by fabre d'eglantine (October 1793), Cloots was arrested and guillotined with the Hébertists (March 24, 1794).
